 PITHRU LOKAM / ANCESTORS WORLD

 1.     The distance between Earth and Yama Puri is estimated at 2,076,054 KM. Pithru Lokam is one the State in Yama Lokam/Puri. The distance between Earth and Moon is 384,000 KM (the shortest distance is 360K KM). Pithru Lokam (Ancestors World) is situated behind Chandra Mandalam (Moon). Those eligible Jeevathmaas’ (Souls) will take one year to reach Pithru Lokam. Here the lunar year must be considered which is 336 human days (other scholars differ to 324 or 341 days). Therefore, the Jeevathma will have to travel 6,178 KM per day to reach Pithru Lokam. During the travel period, those eligible Jeevathmas will be known as Chethanan.

2.       Pithru Loka Pravesam (entry to Pithru Lokam) is not an easy task. It is not for all expired people. Lots of qualities and eligibility criteria are to be passed to reach such a divine status. Kindly note even Devas and Gods worship Pithru Devathas therefore attaining such status is highly a blessing. One practical example I would like to stress here. The food that we eat must digest and give us health is the purpose of eating. If the eaten food did not digest in a good manner and it stays in the stomach as undigested food, then it can only create deceases and bring down our health. Likewise, after numerous birth and death finally we get a Human birth and, in that birth, if we don’t concentrate on knowing our inner truth (who am I, why I am here, why me, where I came from, where will go from her, what is next – these are Aathma Vichaaraas) and persuade ourselves to do holly acts, practice Aathma Dhyaana Yogam, helping the needy, etc. Instead of doing this if we commit unlawful and sinful activities Souls cannot expect an entry into Pithru Lokam. One must realize the sinful activities and ask pardon from God and take an oath to not repeat the same mistakes again and if possible, undergo the punishments related to the activities. Only such clean and pure Souls can enter Pithru Lokam. Alternatively, if the same (DNA) blood relatives pray and ask for pardon on their deceased ancestors (through rituals etc) and if God accept their prayers, it is God’s wish to pardon the Soul and grant entry to Pithru Loka and thereafter show the way to attain Moksham (Liberation). Therefore, keeping this in mind, irrespective of the nature of the deceased person, we must conduct the Pithru Karma lovingly as prescribed in our Sastra so that the Jeevathma can become pure and attain its final stage. In this process, the undigested food is like the blemished soul, and cleansing and helping digestion through various medicines are like purifying the Soul with the help of rituals for liberation to the soul.

 3.      Since Pithru Lokam is having its proximity to Yama Lokam we can see Pithru Lokam only during the dark period (Moon’s waning) since it is located behind Chandra Mandalam (the Backside of Moon), which is why this period is known as Krishna Paksham. Such a period (15 days) is preferred or graced by Pithrus whereby they see us (Earth). They are in Sookshma Roopam (subtle form) however some Pithrus can take their desired form and appear in front of relatives or other people. Some appear even in the dream.

 4.      Pithrus is always in meditation mode in their world. However, whenever their relatives call them on their respective days (Pithru Dhinam and a few other auspicious days) they will appear along with escorted Devathas and accept the offerings happily and bless the Kartha and his family members, especially for progeny. Due to their contemplation, they gain lots of positive energy/power to bless whoever they like. That is why Sastraas says even Gods are looking forward to getting their blessing. As we learned, everyone has Pithrus except Sada Siva and Moola Prakruthi Parasakthi.

 5.       Pithrus are highly tolerant and have immense patience. They are always pure from inner and outer form, Nithya brahmacharis (though pairs/couples but no physical relationship), possess the highest Dhaya (compassion), Sadh-Gunas, and are equal to ever-living Devas (Anaadhi Deva Sadhrusaas).

 6.       Pithru Lokam is collectively ruled by Swadha Devi, Yama Dharma Raja, and 7 Pithru Devathaas with a clear understanding of their responsibilities. Human Pithrus usually resides in Pithru Lokam, Deva Lokam, and Naraka Lokam, according to the Punyam & Paapam they get transferred between each Lokas, and finally, the Jeevathma will be asked to go to Earth for seeking salvation/liberation efforts from transmigration wheel.

 7.       By default, all departed Jeevathmaas cannot become Uthama Pithrus, this status must be created by the living blood relatives by way of Veda-uktham, Mantra-uktham and Kriya-uktham or the Jeevathma while living in the body must be accumulated innumerable Punyam whereby it creates its own demand after leaving the mortal body. Generally, too many Punyam holders will eventually reach their Upasanamoorthy’s (Personal God) world by passing Pithru-Lokam.

PITHRU SOOCHANA SAMVIDHA / INFORMATION ABOUT ANCESTORS

 8.       Pitha/Pithru/Pithara: = Pithru represents pairs of departed ancestors’ Jeevathmas. Pitha means single, Pithru means pairs (Husband and wife) and Pithara means multiple pairs up to 7 generations including Kartha (who is responsible for funeral rites and follows Tharpanam and Srardhams periodically in his lineage). Ubhavaya Vamsa Pithrus means Paternal and Maternal sides.

 9.       Since Brahmins are born and brought up under Vedic System (from conceiving till final cremation) they are compelled to do this Samskara too. Whereas others can perform Pithru Srardham as per their non-vedic system or choice.

PITHRU DEVATHAAS / GODS OF ANCESTORS

10.   Total 31 Pithru Devathaas were created by Lord Brahma. They are six sets of different members per group. Four primary Pithru Devathaas were given the duty to protect the Kartha from all four corners viz. 1. Agnishwathaa Pithru Devatha rule East quarter and protect from there, 2. Barhishadh Pithrus from South quarter, 3. Aajyapaa Pithrus from the West quarter and finally 4. Somapaa Pithrus from the North quarter.

11.   The other Pithru Devathaas are (9 members set) = Viswa, Viswabhuj, Aaradhya, Dharma, Dhaanva, Subhaanana, Bhoothidha, Bhoothikruth, Bhoothi. (6 members set) = Kalyaana, Kalyathaakarthri, Kalya, Kalyatharaasraya, Kalthahethu, Anagha. (7 members set) = Vara, Varenya, Varadha, Pushtidha, Thushtidha, Viswapaathra, Dhathra. (5 sets) = Mahath, Mahathman, Mahitha, Mahimaavath, Mahabala. (4 sets) = Sukhadha, Dhaanada, Dharmada, Bhoothitha.

12.   Pithrus are 7 types. Four are known as Prathyaksha Pithru Devathaas (visible and having gross body) and three are known as Aprathyaksha Pithru Devathaas (invisible and having subtle body).

 13.   As we learned about types of Pithrus, even among the Pithrus there are segmentations known as Chaathurvarnya Pithrus viz. Brahmin’s Pithrus are called Somapan, Kshathriya is Havirbhuk/Havishman, Vaisyaa are Aajypaas, and Soodraa are Sukaalikaas.

 14.   Somapaans are children of Bhrugu Maharshi, Havirbhuk are children of Angirass Maharshi, Aajyapaas are children of Pulasthya Maharshi and Sakalikaas are children of Vasishta Maharshi. Here we need to note one important and non-discriminative fact. That is, Soodraas and Soodra Pithrus are children of Brahma Rishi Vasishta (A Suddha Brahmin)! This reveals that the Jaathi (caste-based) classifications made by Western people have no real discrimination values according to Sastras. It was just arranged for the sake of profession (unwritten Reservation/Quota system of ancient days) otherwise how can a Brahmin’s children become Soodraas instead of Brahmin itself. As we know the Veda Pramanam says Janma Jayathe Soodrah, Karmanaa Dwija Uchyathe. All our invaders and politics played a dirty role to divide us and fight for no one’s welfare. This is called the Fox strategy (you know what I mean!). As far as I know, in Sanathana Dharma God does not underestimate or ignore anyone’s contribution to the welfare of this Universe as well as run his administration. We need to know that the four VARNI systems were introduced from Sri Vishnu’s four body parts such as Brahmins from his face, Kshathriyas from the chest and hands, Vaisyas from the thigh, and Soodras from his foot. We all know every pooja has been done and offered flowers to his lotus feet, therefore, the topmost importance was given to Soodras than the other three sects. In fact, Soodraas do not need to do any Pooja or Yagam & Yagna because they are innocent and always pure at heart. This is the main reason they were kept away from learning Vedas and related Yagnaas. This really good intention was manipulated by the politicians and invaders for their hidden benefits.

 15.   The Deva Varga has two Pithru sthaanaas viz Somasatthaas and Agnishwaatthaas. Somansathaas are also known as Saadhyaas (a type of Deva Ganaas) the children of Virat Purushan. Whereas other Deva Gana Pithru devathaas are known as Agnishwaatthaas the children of Mareechi Maharshi.

 16.   Dhaithyaas, Dhaanavaas, Yakshaas, Gandharvaas, Uraghaas, Rakshasaas, Suparnnars, Kinnaraas are other types of Deva Ganaas that belong to Pithru Devatha Barhishatth. These Barhishatths are children of Athri Maharshi.

 17.   Also note, Vipraas (Brahmanaas) have got many other important Pithru Devathaas known as Agni-dhagh-dhaas, Anagni-dhagh-dhaas, Kaavyaas, Bharhishaths, Agnishwaathaaas, and Sowmyaars.

 18.   All Pithru Devathaas are the children of Saptha Rishis (Athri, Bhrugu, Kuthsa, Vasishta, Gauthama, Kaasyapa, and Angirass) and Saptha Rishis are the children of Hiranyagarbha Puthran first Manu (Brahma). Manu was the first Brahma Prachapathi who composed Manusmruti for a reward-full life for all beings. The author of Manusmruthi, the creator, and the lawmaker are the same. Therefore, his intention must be followed by his children to get his grace and get rid of the mundane transmigration system. Seven Pithru Devathas were created by Brahma who instructed them to avail the offerings given by Devas as well as Humans. Out of these Seven, four Pithru Devathas have physical bodies (Sthoola Sareeram) and the other three are having only subtle bodies (Sookshma Sareeram). Humans are performing Srardham & Tharpanam to get the blessings of their Pithrus through these four Pithru Devathas at the same time Devas will conduct to receive blessings from the three Sookshma Pithru Devathas. 4 Sthoola Pithru Devathas are Kavyavaahan, Analan, Soman, Yamen and 3 Sookshma Pithru Devathas are Aaryamaan, Agnishathwa, Barhishathwan. All Pithru Devathas are generally known as Somaadhi Pitharaha… Please note there is a difference of opinion on Sthoola and Sookshma Pithru Devathaas numbers and sequences in various sastras and Puranas.

 19.   All Pithru’s (Deva, Human, Asura & Dhanava) Goddess is “Swadha Devi” and custodian Devathaass are known as “Viswedevaas”. Swadha Devi is also known as the wife of Chief Pithru Devatha. Swadha Devi was the daughter of Prajapathi who married Pithru Devatha. Pithru Devathaas are a total of 10 members namely Vasu, Sathyan, Kruthu, Kaalan, Kaaman, Druthi, Kuru, Purooravass, and Maadraav.

 20.   Srardham function is also known as Bali Tharpanam in some regions. There are two important Balis to be offered during Srardham with a mantra. First Bali is for God Sarvantharyami and the second Bali is for Pithrus, by saying the mantra as “Sarvathma Bhoothaye Nama” for Sarvantharyami and “Swadha Pithrubhyaha” for Pithrus by facing South quarter (Dhakshina Dik-Mugam).

 21.   Viswedevaas are the guardians and escorts of all Pithru Devathaas. Therefore, first Viswedavaas are to be formally invited and respected before initiating offerings to their own family Pithrus. If Viswedevaas are not giving protection and their grace to Pithrus then all the offerings (Pithru Srardha Bhojana Dhravyaas) of Kartha will be snatched away by the Rakshasaas roaming in the sky. Kindly note Naandi Srardha Devathaas are different from these Pithru Karma Devathaas.

 22.   During Pithru Srardha karma at the beginning and end of the event is always Devas are invoked and worshiped without which the function will produce fruitful reward.

PITHRU SRAARDHAM / POOJANAM – REMEMBERING & WORSHIPING ANCESTORS

 23.   The one (Kartha) who offers food and water to an eligible person on behalf of his departed ancestors is called Srardham. “Sradhayam Kriyamaanam Karma Ithi Srardham”. The offerings must be with deep love, respect, and affection. The offeror (Kartha) should have good faith that the food he is offering to a living person on Earth would surely reach their ancestors living in Pithru Lokam in a subtle form. If Kartha is alive, it is his duty to offer the food on a selected Pithru day whether they are already taken another birth or still living in any one of the celestial worlds or in Pithru Lokam itself. With reference to Panchangam (Thidhi, Vaara, Nakshathra, Yogam, and Karanam), Thidhi is important for Pithrus (ancestors), and Star is important for a birth in the family. Thidhi is important because Pithru’s one day is equal to our fortnight period (15 days), hence Pithrus are remembered based on Paksham (fortnight – Krishna Paksam).

 24.   There are two types of Srardhams viz 1. Deva Srardham and 2. Pithru Srardham. For Deva Srardham 2 Brahmins and Pithru Srardham 3 Brahmins are required to receive food and water (Bhojana Dhravyam). In case of a shortage of Brahmanaas (Brahmana-Lobham), even one Brahmana is sufficient. In this case, all Upacharaas offered to Pitha, Pithamaha, and Prapithamaha (Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather) to be done in one Brahmana himself.

 25.   The food that is offered to Pithrus is called Kavyam. (For devas it is Havyam).

 26.   Those Brahmanaas who are going to partake and eat food offered in the Srardham by Kartha on behalf of Pithrus must be Vedic scholars. If not, a huge sin (Paapam) will occur according to Dharma Sastram. The punishment is severe! Post the death of Kartha, his soul will be dragged into Narakam and offered “Soolarshti” to eat (burning iron balls). This shows the importance of the function and the participant’s eligibility. At least he must regularly do thrikaala or dwikaala Sandhyavandhanam in which most of the Mantras are from Vedas so by default he is deemed a Vedic scholar. Anyway, nowadays many do not do Paarvana Srardham whereby Brahmana Bhojam is a must for a Vedic scholar. Vipra Lobham (scarcity of Vedic scholar Brahmins) is another problem that we face nowadays.

 27.   Ideally Kartha should not investigate whether the Sradha Bhojana Brahman is his friend or foe, ideally, he must be an unknown person. However, in case there is a Virpa Lobham then he can request his best friend (Sadgunavaan) to sit and accept Brahmana Bhojanam.

 28.   Brahmachari, widowers, non-vedic scholars, fatigued and unhealthy persons, gamblers, and beggars are not allowed to eat Srardha Brahmana Bhojanam. To avoid such situations, Brahmins usually get remarried (if their wife died) immediately after the 13th-day function, otherwise he is not allowed to do many Vedic rituals.

 29.   The Brahmin who is invited to participate in Srardha Bhojanam must be abstained from sexual activities (Maidhunam) and maintain self-control (Aathma Niyanthranam) from the day of receipt of the invitation. Not only that, should do only minimal Nithya Karmaanushtaanam at the same time Vedha Adhyayanam must be stopped immediately. Srardha Kartha also to be followed these rules. The reason is that as and when he accepts the invitation, from that instant those Pithrus will start follow him invisibly through Praana Vaayu. Until the Srardham gets over Pithrus or their aura will stay with them in a subtle form.

 30.   If the Kartha uses silver vessels or silver quoted copper vessels for the Pithru Srardha Karma, he will get Akshayya Phalam (endless rewards). The logical reasons are since Pithrus are light divine spirits, these metals are easily identifiable, clean, and have superior conductivity to receive the food offered to them. Also, the Sastra says that the first offering given to Pithru Devathaas was in a silver vessel therefore it became their priority. Of course, prior to the discovery of silver, Karthaas were using mud pots and leaves.

 31.   Sradha (love, attention, and devotion) is the primary or core element in any type of Srardham or Pithru Karma. Though everything there is no Sradha, the event will go to waste. At the same time if Sradha is there and the other elements are missing, still you will get the best grace from Pithrus since they are always Samthrupthaas and Kshiptha-thrupthaas (quickly satisfying nature).

 32.   For Dwijaas (Grihastha Bhramins in specific) between Deva and Pithru Karma the priority should be given to Pithru Karma than Deva Karma.

 33.   Four places are very important and auspicious for conducting Pithru Srardham Karma. They are 1. Prakruthi (clean open space atmosphere), 2. Forests, 3. Water reservoirs or riverbeds, 4. Nirjana Sthalas (solitude/uninhabited places).

 34.   According to Rig-Veda, the Vedic Brahman’s hand (Vedaghnan) is the representing limb of Agni itself. Therefore, whatever is offered to such a Brahmin’s hand is as good as performing the Havana, and Pithrus are happily accepting and receiving such Dhravyaas (offers). This reveals that whenever a Kartha conducts Hiranya Srardham or Non-Vedic Pithru Srardham it is better to select a Rigvedi and offer to his hand. Of course, all other Brahmins have this grace, however, Rigvedi is on priority.

 35.   While bringing Bhojana Dhravyams to serve Brahmins, Kartha’s Saha-dharmini or sisters or any other person must hold the vessels with both hands otherwise there could be a chance of attack from Rakshasaas / Asuraas. In earlier days cooking was done far away from the venue of Srardha; therefore, a careful warning was given by the elders. Nowadays everything happening under one roof itself. Please don’t ask me whether that is good or bad. We must move with the flow of the current era.

 36.   While offering food to Brahmins, the server must offer food with full happiness and satisfaction. If the server offers the food by crying then that food is belonging to Prethaas, if offered with anger it goes to Kartha’s enemies, if offered with unwanted lose talk it will go to dogs (swa) if even by mistake the feet touch their eating leaf (Bhojana Pathram) then it would go to Rakshasaas if the food intentionally spilled outside eating leaf, then it will go to sinners (Paapees). All these rules were laid down by the creator himself (Brahma). Such strict rules were implemented to enhance the devotion of Kartha and his wife/Saha Dharmini. This shows how much care one should take and offer the Srardha Bhojanam.

 37.   While Brahmana Bhojanam, if other Vedic scholars can chant Vedas, Dharma Sastras, Aakhyaanaas, Aagamaas, Ithihaasa, Puranaas, and, Sookthaas for the sake of Pithru Sthaana Brahmanaas to hear, it will multiply the benefits of offerings. At the same time, the eating Brahmanaas must observe strict silence and keep eating. They should never talk about the food’s greatness or self-preferences about food. All radiating devices must be switched off because they can interfere with the spirit as Pithrus, unfortunately nowadays impossible task!

 38.   During Srardham, the daughter’s son (grandson) gets priority and importance. He must eat the Pithru Sesham without fail for everyone’s betterment.

 39.   Srardha Kartha should ensure that Chandalaas, Pig, Chicken, Dog, Rajaswala (women while having monthly periods) and Shandan are not looking at Bhojana Pathram. The Pithru Bhojana Dhravyams will become impure, and it will lose its positive energy (food will have Jeevahaani). This is one of the reasons Srardhams are always conducted on closed-door premises. In earlier days they were conducted in an open space hence this condition was implemented.

 40.   Pithrus are waiting to receive 6 types of Tharpanams from their blood relatives. They are 1. Paksha Tharpanam (Amavasya), 2. Maasa Sankramana Tharpanam (every month first day), 3. Grahana Tharpanam (seasonal), 4. Ayana Tharpanam (Utharayanam and Dakshinayanam), 5. Samvathsara Tharpanam (new year), 6. Srardha Tharpanam (on the day of the annual Srardha Thidhi). In a year they are allowed to receive 96 times Tharpanam (Shannavathi) from Kartha (responsible heir). During this Tharpanam they will get their required quota of food and water (Thila-Udhakam). Tharpanam means offerings for the sake of their satisfaction.

 41.   Pithrus are having 2 Vargaas viz. Pithru Vargam (paternal) and Mathru Vargam (maternal). Both should be equally respected except on the day of the annual Srardham.

 42.    There are other sets of Pithrus known as Sakaarunika Pithrus. These Pithrus get their food and water only during Mahalaya Paksham (Kanya & Kumba Month).

 43.   Those who help others (by offering free food, shelter, clothes, and lifesaving situations – these are the qualities of a parent) while living on this Earth and not reciprocated to the giver, after the giver’s death they become a natural Pithrus of those people who received help from them. They are known as indirect Pithrus. I am sure every human being gets free help from many people, and many will not even remember to pay back their debts.

 44.   The Vedas claim that those Karthaas who offer the food, sesame, and water (Annapindam + Thilam + Jalam) to their ancestors with love and affection (Sradha and Bakthi) along with Swadha Mantram, such as Pithrus will happily consume the food and get their ever-living status (Amarathvam) in Pithru Lokam or Swargam.

 45.   There are some highly auspicious (Utthama Kshethram) places where one can carefully conduct Pithru Karma by way of Smaranam and Prarthanam (remembering and offering) viz. 1. Kuru Kshethram, 2. Samudra Theeram, 3. Samudra-Nadhi Prayagaas, 4. Punya Kshethrams, 5. Punya Nadhi Theertham, 6. Lakes, 7. Pond, 8. Water-well, 9. Solitude places, 10. Thick forests, 11. Pithrus or their relative's house, 12. Kartha’s own house, 13. Badrikasramam, 14. Gaya, 15. Varanasi, 16. Thirunelli, 17. Any South quarter, 18. Kailaasam, 19. 5-Dhaamams, and, 20. Prabhasa.

 46.   There are some important and auspicious timings (Utthama Muhoorthams) to worship and remember Pithrus. They are 1. Srardha Dhinam, 2. Ayanams, 3. Maasa Sankramanam, 4. Maasa Thidhis, 5. Grahanam, 6. Maasa Varsha sankramana dhinam, 7. Aparahna samayam (between 11.40 – 14.00 hours), 8. All 15 days Krishna Paksha period.

 47.   Various types of Pithrus are mentioned in the Sastram viz. 1. Dhayaathi Pithrus, 2. Jnaathi Pithrus, 3. Sakarunika Pithrus, 4. Deva Pithrus, 5. Anaadha Pithrus, 6. Bhootha Pithrus, 7. Pretha Pithrus, 8. Pisacha Pithrus, 9. Gjnaatha Agjnaatha Pithrus, 10. Karunika Pithrus.

 48.   While conducting Pithru-Pretha Karma the Kartha must wear the wet cloth (as it is after taking a bath) whereas while Pithru Karma he must wear a pure dry cloth. One of the main reasons for this condition is that Prethaas they are allowed to sip the water drops of cloth whereas the Pithrus can accept the water poured through the right hand of Kartha in the Pithru Mudra channel.

 49.   Important functions of a Paarvana Homa Srardham are having 5 Kriyaas (Conducts) viz. 1. Brahmana Varanam (Inviting most eligible Brahmana Devatha), 2. Homam (Havanam), 3. Brahmana Bhojanam on behalf of ancestors, 4. Pinda Dhaanam (Offering cooked rice balls), 5. Thila Tharpanam (oblation), in these the Thila Tharpanam is very important.

 50. First-anniversary Srardham is known as “Aabdeega Sraardham” and thereafter every year Srardham is known as “Prathyaabdeega Srardham”.

 51.   A Kartha who tries to satisfy his deceased (Soul) mother, father, grandfather, Guru, and elder people is called Pithru Tharpanam. Likewise, listening, praising, adoring, satisfying, and honoring elders’ good deeds and their quality skills while living (Body) is called Pithru Yagnam.

 52.   To have Pithru Bakthi or devotion towards our own ancestors, we don’t need any certification from the scientific world. It is everyone’s fundamental duty to repay the debts of Pithrus.

PITHRU BANDHAM / RRNAM – RELATIONSHIP & DEBTS WITH ANCESTORS

 53.   Everyone knows the whole world is running its business based on the supply chain. Likewise, all beings especially Humans life itself began and sustained only because of its supply chain concept. Fortunately, our supply chain is not so much complicated as a business model. Our supply chain components are 5 inherited debts (Rrnam). This is what the creator has given to us to follow and achieve enlightenment. Those 5 Rrnams belong to Rishi (Sages), God (Divine), Pithrus (Ancestors), Athidhi (serving unknown and unexpected humans), Boothas (serving all other beings whichever is best possible). Humans got their mortal bodies through the contributions made by these bodies (physical and celestial) and innumerable energies from different parts of this universe. Besides these 5 debts, there are other important ones are 36 elements (Thathwas). Humans are always directly or indirectly connected with ancestors. Therefore, if Humans are alive these debts can be completely repaid. Every loan/debt must be repaid by someone or the other without which it cannot be completely closed. Even if someone gave us something for free, its debts remain floating in the air until the giver enjoys the Punyam received on account of donation/charity. It is very difficult to estimate the beginning and end of this process. It will continue till our existence. Therefore, our duty is to follow the Sastras (lessons to lead pious life) and be debt free!

 54.   Remembering Pithrus itself is a great blessing, such chances may not come to everyone. What is there to lose by giving water and food to eligible people on our ancestor’s behalf? Please don’t fall into the stupidity of modern science and its guidance in this regard. Our selfless Sages are far beyond the particle knowledge of the contradicting total modern science.

 55.   To fulfill one’s duty you don’t need to analyze Punyam (holy merits) and Paapam (sin demerits). Due to our luck and past good deeds, our great Sages were given us the know-how and methodologies for conducting such duties through their rigorous penance (Thapass) whereby positive results are guaranteed. All we need to do is simply follow our local customs (Desa & Kaalam Niyamam) with deep good intentions/faith.

 56.   Everything must be done only as per the best possible (Yadha Sakthi) and means of the individual. Not to consider anything as a burden, especially financial terms. If there is no purity and willingness in one’s act it will not produce desired positive results. This rule is applicable whether material or spiritual acts.

 57.   Almost all religions have some sort of system to send off the final rites and respect the departed soul. Some religions will continue to remember and offer them whatever they can periodically others just do onetime. According to me the relationship between the ancestors and living blood relatives cannot end in one life since both are sharing the same DNA. The only difference is that DNA can deplete, and the quality will change over a period. Yet, according to modern research findings, the DNA trace will completely vanish only by 6.8 million years! By 1000 years it will undergo a change of approximately 75%. According to my understanding DNA can be influenced by Manasa, Vacha & Karmana (verbal contact, south contact, and physical contact) but modern science will accept only the physical involvement. Let religion be anything, humans are only one being or religion or caste or sect. According to their individual religious belief after death, each Soul (Jeevathma) will undergo different stages that include the next birth (incarnation). Our Sanathana system is clear and clever too because it was created by great experienced Sages. Therefore, we need to focus on one thing clearly, Sages and Divine personalities (Devas) are almost equal to God (kindly note anyone can become God through Thapass but Easwara is only one) therefore their advice/guidance can be trusted and followed. No man-made religious principles are competent enough to deal with Soul’s journey (Jeeva Parinaamam) except time immemorial great Sages Sanathana Dharmam. If someone following such principles will have to face reality because religion and its principles are made by humans therefore it cannot be perfect. Fortunately, Sanathana Dharmam is not a religion (Westerners gave a title as Hindus to Sanathana Dharmees for convenient sake, it is beyond all that, everyone can practice Sanathana Dharmam and reap the benefits of it. Hindu is a territory-bound title whereas Sanathanam is a permanent solution to all Humans. One can accept or reject, the truth remains, irrespective of the individual’s choice. Maybe the Easwara (The only owner of all Universe) had decided to give liberation only to those Souls who follow the life of Sanathana Principles and others are yet to be achieved until they have been given a chance to become Sanathani. Everything has an eligibility criterion is not. Maybe it is applicable to Souls too when it comes to the liberation/salvation process. When this universe and its living and non-living beings are not simply man-made why follow the man-made principles alone for salvation? Why take the risk of not attaining liberation on the right path rather than following unclear methods is my question.

PITHRU SAAMAANYA SOOCHANAYAM – GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ANCESTORS

 58.   According to Jyothi Sasthram (Astrology) 8th and 10th house indicates Pithru Thrupthi, Pithru Saapam, and Pithru Rrnam (happiness, curse, and debt).

 59.   Raahu (ascending node) is the planet that signifies Pithru status. There are 14 types of Pithru Dosham referred to in Jyothi Sasthram that afflict human beings (departed ancestors blood family members).

 60.   Unless the Karmaas are completely undergone or eradicated along with its fruits, liberation (Moksham) is impossible. Not only that the blemished Soul (Jeevathma – after leaving the body it may be known as Bhoothathma, Prethathma, Pisachathma, Durathma, Pithurathma etc…) will float around in the atmosphere (Prapancham). If at all it gets an opportunity to be a human being, then the whole life will be enveloped with various ailments. This is the punishment nature is awarding to that Soul. Nowadays even some modern scientists are accepting the discoveries and guidance of our ancient scientists, that the afflicted Soul / Jeevan (Life energy) is not dying, it is only floating in the air as if it is looking for something. According to our Sastra this “something” is none other than looking for an opportunity to enter a body to fulfill its desires. The Soul that has Jeeva in it can be classified as Jeevathma.

 61.   The Parents (Husband & Wife) who die without having their own biological male children will get a designation as “Kaarunika Pithrus”. In case the Male member dies then the wife will become Kartha. Usually, cremation is allowed only to male members hence the person who is going to perform “Karthavyam”, will receive non-objection or permission to conduct final rites through handing over Dharba Grass from Kartha to Karthavyam. Kartha can give the Dharbha Grass anyone to of her choice. In the case of a female member, either husband or daughters’ male children can perform or any designated person. In this case, the husband is by default Kartha since no male children. Blood relatives are the preferred choice because DNA relationships enhance love and affection. Thereafter every Varshaabdhi Srardha Dhinam, the wife or husband can directly perform Pithru Yagnam in a Sankalpa Roopam. Here, Homam (Havan) and Brahmana Bhojanam are not practiced. Kindly note once the Dharbha Grass is defused (Visarjanam), thereafter no responsibilities of the Karthavyam to conduct the remaining rituals (like limited power of attorney).

 62. For Those ancestors who were bachelors (Brahmachari/unmarried), there are a few complicated rules mentioned however more or less it is as applicable to Kaarunika Pithrus.

 63.   To create the human body, all energies & celestial powers across the universe have contributed according to their eligibility. Besides this, the most important Jeevathma was contributed by the Easwara (Paramathma). Therefore, Humans are having natural hereditary debts in them due to which Humans are supposed to reciprocate at least through respect and remembrance. Such invaluable Jeevathma (Soul) when it leaves the body it carries its gained awareness, experience, and consciousness (Aathma Bhodham) to decide its future life. Since the Jeevathma has already left the body, it has limitations to conduct any activities as a remedy for his/her wrong deeds. In this situation, only the blood relatives can ask for pardon and do remedies on their behalf as prescribed by the Sastras. This is activities are known as Pithru Yagnam or Prithu Karma. After knowing this I am sure no one will hesitate to pay at least a simple respect to their ancestors lovingly and voluntarily. We should be very much compassionate towards our ancestors, and they will shower their blessings on their kin on Earth. Here there is no importance to any religion or caste or creed. It is everyone’s fundamental duty. For some sects of people, it is Vedic and lengthy procedures, and for some non-Vedic simple procedures. Whichever way it must be conducted. Unlike other faith, Sanathana Dharma has always given immense importance to immortal Aathma than the mortal body.

 64.   It is also true that, to attain Moksham one’s account must be clean and no leftover. Therefore, if people commit wrong deeds that carry sin must undergo punishment as quick as possible otherwise no Moksham to that Jeevathma. Such unfinished sins are to be wiped out either by undergoing the punishment given by nature or compensate through asking pardon or earning merits (Punyam) equivalent to the debit balance of sin by doing charity etc… If the individual is unable to do so, then their blood relatives can do on their behalf.

 65.   In a year two months are celebrated for Pithrus, it is called Pithru Uthsava Kaalam. viz. Kanya and Kumba (Approximately Mid Sep-Oct / Mid-Feb-Mar) months. It is also known as Mahalaya Paksha Maasam. It starts from Kumba & Kanya month’s Krishna Paksha Shashti Thidhi to Amavasya for about 10 days period. During the Mahalaya Paksham, all types (64 types) of Pithrus are remembered and offered food and water to please those known, unknown, and directly or indirectly interacted with and connected ancestors. These Pithrus have a designated name as Sakaaruneeka Pithrus (friends, sex-mates, teachers, unknown relatives, interacted personalities, self-growth contributors, domestic animals, domestic helpers, etc) and/or Kaaruneeka Pithrus (baren or male childless ancestors).

 66.   Sastra is giving detailed information about the day of Srardham or Thidhi to be observed.

a). On the Pithru Dhinam if the concerned Thidhi is having more than 19 Naazhiga (7 hours 36 minutes) the same day is to be considered for Srardham. If suppose the Thidhi is having more arc on the next day during Aparahna Kaalam (11.40 to 2.40 pm) then the Srardham is to be observed on the next day. In other words, whichever day has the maximum Thidhi Arc, especially during AparahnaKaalam that day is auspicious to conduct Srardham.

b). If the Srardha Maasam is having Thidhi-Dwayam i.e., in one month the Thidhi may appear two times, in such case the 2nd one to be considered provided there is no Maasa/Varsha Sankramanam on that day. If Sankramanam is occurring, then the first time Thidhi is to be considered. If both months, the Thidhi occurs on Sankramana Dhinam then the first time Thidhi is to be considered.

c). In a particular month only 1 Thidhi day is occurring then the same day is to be observed however 19 Naazhiga of the concerned Thidhi must be there from Sunrise.

d). On the same Thidhi, if Mother and Father both Srardham occur then first conduct Father’s Srardham then Mother’s. Food for serving can be the same preparation. No need to double cook separately.

e). If Soorya/Chandra Grahanam (Eclipse) occurs on the day of Srardham, then that day observe fasting and do the Srardham on the next day.

 67.   We need to know the reason for offering the Anna Pindam and a portion of the rice to crows (Kaakam). There is a story on this account. Once upon a time, Lord Yama Dharma Raja had to undertake the form of a crow and wander around. During that time to satisfy his hunger he had to fly hither and thither. Therefore, while living those who give food to crows will not be punished to enter Yama Lokam or Naraka Lokam after demise. He gave this boon to all Naraloka Vaasis (residents of Earth). Ever since people respected his advice/boon seriously and started offering food to crows. There are other stories too, but this one is more Vedic and authentic.

 68.   Pithrus fear 6 items that we are regularly in contact with must be removed or hidden or abstained from while conducting Srardham. They are 1. Ghanda Naadham (Sound of Bell), 2. Iron (utensils etc), 3. Vibhoothi (sacred ashes), 4. All types of Thilakam (adored in the forehead and parts of the body), 5. Rudraksha Mala, 6. God’s symbols/forms (Talisman/Locket etc.).

 69.   The Sastras and Wisemen say that the Jeevathma enters Pithru Lokam in two ways. 1. The righteous person enters through Chandra Mandalam (World of Moon) and 2. the Brahmacharya Yogi (the one who escalates his Suklam/Semen upward till the center of the head) enters through Soorya Mandalam (World of Sun).

 70.   In the house, Pithrus (ancestors) photos (Chaya Chithram) should be hanged only by facing the North or West quarter. Ideally one should avoid keeping the photos if it is taken through a camera because the photo is a portion of his/her own actual aura, and a subtle disturbance can happen to Pithrus even if they are far away from us.  However, if it was sketched by an artist then no restriction to keep photos.

PITHRU STHOTHRAM / ANCESTORS PRAYERS

 71.   Three powerful Pithru Thrupthikaramcha Sthothram can be chanted by Karthaas (may be an alternate Pithru Poojana solution for this dynamic lifestyle). Please chant daily at least three times a day, if possible. While chanting hold a pot of water and offer them after the slokas, then do Namaskaram (water to be offered only during the morning and afternoon prayers).

Notes: In my humble opinion, this subject will always raise a lot of contradictions and differences of opinion due to various Vedic schools, Smruthis, and Soothraas practiced across Bharatham. Therefore, kindly keep this in mind and move forward. There can’t be a single-window solution to this topic.

I did my best to include as much information as possible, yet some areas may not have come across to my knowledge or research. Please forgive me for the errors and omissions. Sivoham!
