NARADA BAKTI SUTRAM - TAMIL UPANYASAM - OCT-18-2019 : Episode 06

Om Namasivaya Nama:

Narada Bakthi Suthram -  Chapter 01 - Para Bhathi Swaroopam:

Sutram 03:

Amrutha Swaroopa Cha!
Cha = And, Saa = That, Bakthi = Devotion, Amrutha = Nectar itself, Swaroopa = In the form of.

Meaning: Bakthi is not only unconditional love (Prema Swaroopa), but it also Amruta itself. Those who consume Amruta will attain Amarathwam, means they will be escaped from the transmigration system forever and merge into Paramathman itself.

Sage Narada says, Bakthi's Prema Swaroopam is external (Bahyam) whereas the Amrutha Swaroopam is subtle and internal (Antharam) results of the Bakthi Upasana. Our ancient sages referred to Swarga (Paradise) and Bhog (Entertainment and Enjoyment) is mainly to attract humans to respect holy path. Through Bakthi one can attain the ultimate joy (Ananda) in his current and future life. A true devotee will never ask for Mukthi, whereas God gives him out of compassion as the reward to his/her devotion.

One attains Bakthi and purity of mind (Manas) only through his/her Thyaga (Sacrificing sensual pleasure and comforts), Yoga (Selfless spiritual practices) and Vyakulatha (Restless), as a result, or satisfied by the God, grant him/her with pure Bakthi. The outcome of this practice suggests that the devotee does self-efforts (Swa-Prayathnam) and God showers compassion known as Upaya (Approach) whereas the end reward (Upeyam) for this effort is Moakshanandam (Liberation).

Sutram 04:

Yellabdwa Poomaan Sidho Bhavathi, Amrutho Bhavathi, Thruptho Bhavathi!
Yellabdwa = When one gets this type of Bakthi, Poomaan = Human/DevoteeSidha: = Accomplished, Bhavathi = Become/Happen, Amrutha = Nectar, Thruptha: = Fully satisfied / Contentment.

Meaning: When a person becomes the owner of Amrutha Swaroopa Bakthi, he/she shall become Poornagnan (Fully accomplished person), Amaran (conqueror of transmigration system) as well as Thrupthan (Fully satisfied or contented).

Deva Rishi Narada says that the goal of human birth itself is to enjoy the beauty of Bakthi (Devotion), consume the Nectar and then attain Moksham (Liberation). A true devotee need not work hard to earn Mukthi as oppose to Bakthi. God will eventually reward him/her with Mukthi without fail.

Sage Narada is also providing some easy methods/tips to the devotees for attaining God's blessings as Moksham. They are:

1. Detachment from Bhogam to develop Bakthi in God
2. Detachment from Vishaya Sakthi (Sensual pleasure) and intention to entertain oneself.
3. Un-interrupted innocent prayers. This is the only one Upaya (Remedy) to receive Bakthi in God.
4. Walk towards God, don't look back and hesitate
5. Even when you are engaged in the worldly activities, listen to holy names, glories and spread his grace/message among living beings.
6. Earn the compassion and blessings of other devotees as well Maha Purushas, Gurus etc.
7. Live in the company of Sathsangees, though it is difficult to get it but one must make an effort.
8. One must melt the minute he/she gets a chance to think of God.

NARADA BAKTI SUTRAM - TAMIL UPANYASAM - OC-11-2019 : Episode 05

Om Namasivaya Nama:

Narada Bakthi Suthram -  Para Bhathi Swaroopam:

Sutram 02:

Saa Thwasmin Paramaprema Roopa!
Saa = That, Bakthi = Devotion, Thu Asmin = Therefore, here, Parama Prema Roopa = Supreme Innocent Devotion.

Meaning: Bakthi is nothing but a continues flow of innocent love towards Upasana Moorthy (God).

According to Deva Rishi Narad, Bakthi is divided into two parts based on its view/stage viz. Sadhaka and Sidhan. Bakthi Sadhana (Initial stage) is considered as Gaunam or Apara Bakthi or Saguna Paath, whereas the Bakthi Sidhan (Achiever) is considered as Mukhyam or Para Bakthi or Nirguna Paathi.

Sage Narda's opinion that all most all beings worship God only to full fill their wishes, it is really rare to find a Nishkamya Bakthi Practicer! (Desireless Devotee). Some of the set of people practice Vairya Bakthi (Enmity towards God) and a chance to meet God and get killed by God due to their intolerable atrocities towards good people (Dharma Aathmaas). Sage Narada is accepting such an attitude of worship at the same time this practice has strong will power and determination in achieving the desired goal of the Aathma. This type of Bakthi is known as "Samrambha Yogam". The sad part of such practice is that God will give darsan and punish them too but not give Bakthi (Devotion) Rasam (Enjoyment). Whereas knowing God through Bakthi Sadhana is as good as enjoying a tasty sweet fruit. A devotee's faith will be firm only when he/she knows God's graceful act and magnificent greatness.

A genuine innocent devotee will possess the following supreme qualities such as:

1. Supreme innocent devotion
2. Selfless attitude
3. God is always under his/her command
4. By hearing God's holy names the devotee will forget his/her existence and melt just like an iceberg.
5. While worshipping, the devotee's mind will be merged into the ocean of compassionate God.
6. After gaining true knowledge, the devotee achieves permanent grace and mercy of God.
7. Gyan and Bakthi (Knowledge and Devotion) will support each in retaining God's grace.

Narada Rishi says why devotees' heart is melting when they achieve the highest quality of devotion? because Heart is the place where God resides in every being especially humans.  "Hrudhi Ayamithi Hrudhayam".  Hence upon realizing God the devotee's heart will naturally melt.

Maharshi did not specify a particular God's name in this Sutra, but he carefully chose the word "Asmin" being Napumsaka Nama (Genderless) instead of Vishnu or Siva etc. He is also giving free hand to the devotees to place their Personal God (Upasana Moorthy).

To enjoy the Bakthi (Devotion) there has to be a small gap between God (Aradhya Element) and Devotee (Aradhyan), just like Dwaitham and Visishtadwaitham philosophy principle.

NARADA BAKTI SUTRAM - TAMIL UPANYASAM - SEP-27-2019 : Episode 04

Om Namasivaya Nama:

Narada Bakthi Suthram -  Para Bhathi Swaroopam:

Sutram 01:

Om Harihi Om, Athadho Bakthim Vyakhyasyamaha!
Atha = Therefore, Now, Bakthi = Devotion, Vyakhyasyamaha = I will explain in detail

Sri Deva Rishi Narada Uvacha (Said) that Omkaram and Atha Sabdam (Sound) came out of Lord Brahma's throat. A - Alphabet or Sound represent many high-quality meanings as far as Sanathana Dharma has concerned such as primary sound in this universe, ever pervading Vishnu, Mooladhara chakram, Bhagawan Sri Krishna himself, the first alphabet in most of the languages, a sound that comes out without any efforts, beginning, Maha Ganapathy etc..

To be a master of any Sastra (Scriptures) one must possess Five basic qualities such as Arthithvam (Desire/Wish), Samarthyam (Smartness), Grandhaartha Medha Sakthi (Excellent Memory), Poorva Paada Parichayam (some knowledge about the subject) and Aachaarya Cha Grandha Viswasam (Faith in the learning subject as well as Guru's teachings). Whatever one learn in the presence of Guru only produce fruitful results.

To learn a specific Sastra one must process pre-qualifications. For example, To learn Vedantham he/she should be a master of Sadhana Chathushtayam (Vivekam, Vairagyam, Shadka-Sampathi, Mumukshuthvam) and to learn Jaimini Suthram (936 Sutras) must be completed all four Vedas etc. whereas to practice Bakthi Yogam all he/she needs only a firm faith in God and liberation from transmigration. Devi Rishi also suggests that, he/she should not be a chronic a passionless or extream fond of everything.

To practice Bakthi Yogam, one need not have even human body/life, the Athma can be in any being, there are no strict rules such as he/she has to be a human, born in the high caste system, good religion, holy land, divine personality etc... Those who wish to receive God's grace can practice Bakthi Sadhana.

Ekantha Bakthi is the main cause to attain Mokha (Liberation) that prompted Deva Rishi Narada to compose Bakthi Sutram. Bakthi Sadhana is far easier and better approachable than Ghyaana and Karma Yogam. In fact Bakthi can only complement and supplement all other Yogas.

Deva Rishi elaborated his Bakthi Suthram purely based only his own experience as well as many other devotees practice experiences. Upon learning Bakthi Sutram, it will guide the person to which path he/she must follow to achieve God's grace as well as to attain Mukthi.

NARADA BAKTI SUTRAM - TAMIL UPANYASAM - SEP-20-2019 : Episode 03

Om Namasivaya Nama:

Narada Bakti Suthram - Poorva Parvam - continued

Deva Rishi Narada after elevating Rathnakaran to Valmiki Maharshi proceeded to "Samya Prasam" Veda Vyasa Maharshi's Asramam situated close to the riverbank of Saraswathi. Sage Vyasa was undergoing severe uncomfortable situation in his life. Sage Narada enquired the reason for his sorrows. After hearing Sage Veda Vyasa's explanations, Narada narrated his life story then recommended him to write Srimad Bhagavatham in an elaborative way keeping his Bakti Suthram as a base. Accordingly, Sage Vyasa completed the task and attain Sayoojyam.

Sage Narada is the Parama Acharya for Sanathana Dharmam. "Rish" means True Knowledge and Rishi word is derived from the root word of Rish. Without his interference from time to time, we would not have enjoyed the essence of devotion (Bakthi) which is the easy and primary route to know God and elevate ourselves to the Godlihood status.

There are 8 important Deva Rishis namely Nara, Narayana, Vaalakhilyaas, Kardhaman, Parvatha, Narada, Asitha and Vathsara. Deva Rishi Narada was the Guru for many mahatmas and even incarnates of God. Most popular divine personalities include Prahladan, Hanuman, Valmiki, Vyasa, Devendran and Soman etc..

Soothram is a concept designed by the great souls to remember and practice easily. Soothrams are small words or sentences but carry huge amount of meaning and reasoning for a devotee.

There are 3 divisions of Sadhanas viz. Apara Bakthi, Para Bakthi and Anubhoothi.

In Narada Bakthi Suthram, there are 84 Suthraas combined in 5 Chapters. Each chapter deals with comprehensive explanation of devotion. They are:

Chapter 1 (24 Soothras) = Para Bakthi Swaroopam : Para Bakthi is having two-fold approaches called Antharam and Baahyam (Inner and Outer).
Chapter 2 (9 Soothras) = Para Bakthi Mahathmyam: In Adhyaathmik Sadhana, Para Bakthi is having the highest order of control and respect. Whereas, Apara Bakthi is divided into two-fold stages known as "Gaunam" and "Mukhyam". Gaunam is Sadhana's (Practice) primary stage and Mukhyam is the concluding stage.
Chapter 3 (17 Soothras) = Bakthi Sadhanaas : What should be the daily practice for a Sadhak is explained.
Chapter 4 (16 Soothras) = Bakthi Lakshanas :  Uninterrupted devotees's engagements.
Chapter 5 (18 Soothras) = Bakthi Mahima :  How God is blessing the devotees. How a devotee becomes the source of inspiration, happiness, model and graceful to others.

Concluding advise in Bakthi Margam:
1. One has everything only when he/she has Bakthi otherwise nothing.
2. The Supreme God donate himself to an innocent devotee.
3. Bakthi is the highest power of a human being.
4. God and Devotee's relationship is developed and strengthened only through Bakthi.
5. Only the Aathma-Ghyaan can be fully relieved from sorrows! Bakthi is the foundation for Aathma Ghyaan.
6. A devotee or person who sees God in everything and every being is inside the God will be known as Bhagavadothaman (Supreme devotee among devotees).
7. Only through Bakthi, one can see God in person.

From our next Satsang, we will start with the first Soothram.

MAHALAYA LAGU THARPANAM

Om Namasivaya Nama:

I would like to share with you a simple Mahalaya Tharpanam (Lagu) to be performed by all. This is based on Krishna Yajur Vedam Abasthamba Sutram.

Those who can perform Brihat Tharpanam is most welcome, however, given the busy lifestyle of many, I thought doing something simple rather than doing nothing makes a huge difference. Let us think about our ancestors (Pithrus) during these 16 days of Mahalaya Paksha.

There are 2 Mahalaya Paksham prescribed by the Sastra. One will fall during Badrapada Month (Sep) and other is Maaga (Feb) Month. The first Mahalayam is very important, that start from Sravana Poornima and ends on Badrapadha Amavasya day.

Please note that the Gothram and Pithrus names are an example. You will have to replace it with yours. Also, note the scenario here is that Kartha's parents and grandparents are not alive.

NARADA BAKTI SUTRAM - TAMIL UPANYASAM - SEP-13-2019 : Episode 02

Om Namasivaya Nama:

Narada Bakti Suthram - Poorva Parvam - continued

Happy birthday to Sri Deva Rishi Narada!

After getting Divya Sareeram from Lord Brahma, that can enter anywhere in whichever form one wishes, Sri Narada received Bhagavath Upadasem and his Thamburu Veena from his own father Lord Brahma. Narada was not born through Yoni of a female, therefore his birth is considered as Manasa Ayonija Janma. Usually, Ayonija will not fall into Samsara (Transmigration system). Such bodies are not attracted to the opposite sex and fall into Samsara.

Anyway, after getting blessings from Lord Brahma he continued his search for the real truth, that is Brahman! Now he is well versed in all Vedic Mantras but does not know the Aathma. Therefore decided to approach Sri Sanathkumar Maharishi for further learning. He learned Veda and Vedanta. Sri Sanathkumar Maharishi advised him to consider everything as a bi-product of Brahman, especially to start with Bhagavath Naama, thereafter Vaak (Sruthi itself). Besides these Thathvas, he was advised to realize Manas, Sankalp, Chith, Dhyan, Vigyaan, Balam, Annam, Jalam, Agni, Aakasa, Desires and Prana etc all Brahman itself. Finally, he realized that Brahman alone is absolute truth and It has no quality nor quantity to undergo happy or sad situations, It is ever pervading element, therefore constant and limitless!

Sanathkumar taught him a technique to realize Brahman/Athma. The primary requirement is a stable mind. To keep the mind stable in Brahman one must eat pure and Sathwik food, that eventually promote Chittha Sudhi (unafflicted brain and mind). Once Chittha Sudhi is achieved that will automatically promote Aathma-Smruthi. This Aathma Smruthi will eradicate all Ahamkara Grandis (Ego Glands) from the body, the biggest hurdle to realize Aathma.

Took leave from Sanathkumar Aasram and move to Himalaya for Thapas. Did severe penance and finally, Lord Vishnu appeared before him and granted boons that he will be ever his primary devotee and continue to do service in his name.

Reached river bank of Sindu where Narayana Saras (Lake of Narayan) is located. He saw his brother Daksha Prajapathi's 10,000 children known as Haryaswars were doing severe penance to get blessings from God before entering into Gruhasthasram to create more children. Narada spend some time with them and convinced them to get out of this Samsara and influenced them to take up Sanyasa and realize Brahman. On another time he did the same trick with his other children known as Sabalaswars. Daksha Prajapathi came to know about it and cursed Narada that "he should never be in one place for more than one Muhurtham (48 minutes)". On another occasion, Kala Puthri Jara also gave the same curse on Narada, since he refused her proposal to marry her.  Narada took these curses as blessings and moved.

Narada got convinced that "to escape from Samsara, always thinking of God is more than sufficient", such action will eventually lead the person to Mokha (Liberation). Therefore, he decided to compose/write "Narada Bakthi Suthram" for the welfare of humanity and others. Now, Narada wants to test his Soothras with people so that he can courageously spread these messages to mass. On the way, he got a golden opportunity with Hiranya Kasipu's wife Kayadu. He tested his thesis with a Dhanava Child and produced unmatchable Vishnu Devotee called Prahlada. According to Narada's conviction that a true devotee can be created with anyone being irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, clan etc.

On another occasion, he gave advise to Sunithi's child Druva at the age of five. Druva was asked to do penance by chanting Om Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya Nama: (Dwadasakshari Mantra) at Madhu Van. Lord Vishnu appeared before Druva and gave him boon that he will rule his father's kingdom for 36,000 years and after that create a Druva Mandalam under which Saptha Rishi Mandalam will be located. Druva will never perish even after Pralayam (Complete dissolution).

On another occasion, converted forest don (Kattala thief) Rathnakaran into Sage Valmiki Rishi and pushed him to write Sri Rama Charatham/Ramayan.

NARADA BAKTI SUTRAM - TAMIL UPANYASAM - SEP-06-2019 : Episode 01

Om Namasivaya Nama:

Dear Elevated Souls!

Very happy to re-start Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam Pooja after the two months holidays. The new beginning starts with a new subject called "Narada Bakti Sutram". Let us learn what Sri Deva Rishi Narada is going to teach us based on his spiritual journey and experience.

Sri Deva Rishi Narada composed and revealed his 84 verses of Sutras within 5 Chapters. Before jumping into the actual Sutras, we need to know more about Sri Narada.

1. According to Narada Rishi, what is Bakti?

Ans. 1. An innocent love and affection towards Upasana Moorthy / God is Bakti
Ans. 2. Without any selfish motive and unafflicted love that pushes the mind towards Sri Hari / God is Bakti.
Ans 3. The minute one hears the greatness (Mahima) of God, his/her heart must melt and the mind should be dissolved into God is Bakti.

2. What is the definition of Narada or what is in his name?

Ans1. Naram means the subject of Paramathma (Supreme Soul), Da means giver, hence from the name itself it is revealed that Narada's primary job is giving knowledge about Paramathma.

Ans2. Naram means a group of people, Da means to play a role. Narada gets involved in the life of people, (who deserved to be uplifted)  and connects them to God in a playful way.

Ans3. Naram means pure water and Da means giver. Brahma gave this name to Narada because at the time of his birth the Varsha Rithu (Simham-Kanya / Leo-Virgo) has started and the earth was receiving plenty of rain. His birth is considered to be auspicious for humans as well as other life since without water we can't imagine our survival. Another meaning to this giving water is that He was born to uplift the people from Samsara (Transmigration) and push them for realization and merge with God. Narada enters anyone's life like the water keep flowing until it reaches the sea.

Ans4. Nara means humans, Da means connector. Narada who connects people and Parampushan Sriman Narayanan. He is more interested in uplifting humans than Devas or Dhanavas. Therefore, Narada is very vital to our life.

Without Narada Maharshi, we would not have achieved civilization that includes realization of our journey of life. Though he played a big role in the life of Devas and Dhanas, yet he had special interest in human beings.

POORVA ASRAMAM (Past life) of Deva Rishi Narada:

Sri Narada - Veda Vyasa Samvadam: This part is a conversation between Sage Narada and Veda Vyasa. Narada told his previous life story to Vyasa Maharshi to induce in him to write Srimad Bharavatham at the same time console.

1. He was a Gandharva called "Upabarhanan" in the last Maha Kalpam.
2. Due to the curse of Prajapathi, he was born to a Dhasi Puthran as Soordra Janma.
3. Received advises from Bramins who were undertaking Chathurmasya Vrutham (Jul-Oct).
4. At the time of 5 years old, his mother got bitten by a poisonous snake and she died.
5. Based on Brahmin's advise, he started meditating on God and received the subtle vision of Lord Maha Vishnu (Sookshma Roopam). God said it is only an appetiser, you will be given a full darsan (presence/vision) of mine in your next birth.
6. Lord Mahavishnu gave a boon that he (Narada) will be his one of the most favourable devotee.
7. After the end of Soordra Janma, he was born to Lord Brahma who is also the father and creator of Manasa Puthras Saptha Rishis.

Do you know how much we are blessed by this great sage? These two important indicators confirming that:

1. This day we are in Varsha Rithu (Aug-Oct)
2. This day Chathurmasyam is running (Jul-Oct)

AMAVASYA THARPANAM - KRISHNA YAJURVEDA - APASTHAMBA SUTRA

Om Namasivaya Nama:

AMAVASYA THARPANAM - PROCEDURE AND MANTRAS FOR KRISHNA YAJURVEDI APASTHAMBA SUTRAM METHOD.

By the grace of God and elders, I could able to complete this topic and present to you for everyone's welfare. Let us do something specific that is prescribed to us by our Rishis. People must find some time to dedicate themselves for the sake of our ancestors. We will not exist without them! so how to pay back their debt is a big question. One way is Pithru Yagnam and the easiest and simple method is none other than Tharpanam itself.

Please feel free to comment or send me an email, in case you find an area that can be improved.

I will also write down the topic for easy reading.

Prelude
A brief significance and understanding about Tharpanam:

1. What is Tharpanam?
Tharpanam means offering food for the satisfaction of a deceased person (Ancestors) called Pithru. The food could be either pure water or mixed with some eatable item. Tharpanams are divided in to mainly 3 sections though other types of Tharpanams are there viz. Deva/Brahma Tharpanam (Brahma Yagnam), Rishi/Kaanda Rishi Tharpanam, and Pithru Tharpanam. During Deva Tharpanam the water is offered through first four fingers tip, Rishi Tharpanam water is offered through the right side of palm after bending four fingers and Pithru Tharpanam offered through Thump fingertip. Tharpanam and Srardham have undergone three major changes ever since Indus Valley Civilization viz. 1. The Vedic Period, 2. Grihya Soothra Period, 3. Puranic Period and now we are in non-puranic modern scientific period! More changes are expected the way we are living in today’s world. Apasthamba Rishi, his Guru (Bhodhayana Rishi) and his disciple (Hiranyakesin Rishi) composed three important Dharma Sutras based on Krishna Yajurvedam approximately 2800+ years back and we a lucky to be blessed by them.

2. What are the types of Tharpanam practiced in our era?
1. Udhaka Tharpanam (Pure Water), 2. Thila Tharpanam (Black Sesame Seed along with pure water), 3. Sirodhaka Tharpanam (Wiped water from the head), 4. Sareerodhaka Tharpanam (Wiped water from the body up to hip), 5. Vaasodaka Tharpanam (Water offered by squeezing wet cloth - This is part of Apara Kriya during the first 10 days of death), 6. Pinda Tharpanam (Cooked raw rice ball, water, ghee, curd, and Thil).

3. How many Tharpanam to be conducted in a year (Samvatsaram)?
1. Paksha - Amavasya Tharpanam (12 times), 2. Maasa Sankramana Tharpanam (12 times), 3. Soorya and Chandra Grahana Tharpanam (No fixed numbers), 4. Samvathsara Tharpanam (1 time), 5. Ayana Tharpanam - Utharayana/Dakshinayana (2 times), 6. Sraardha Dina Tharpanam - Eaka Vargam (1 time).  Total of 96 Tharpanams are conducted in a year.

4. Tharpanam is meant for whom?
It is meant for our own departed ancestors, unknown relatives, gurus, friends, servants, mahathmas (Example Bhishma Pithama) along with their Dharma Pathnis. Gothram and Name is very important for Tharpana Kriya in Yajurveda Abasthamba Soothram and there should not be any mistakes in it. Some other Veda Soothras does not give importance to name and gothram but Pithru Sthanam is important for them. If the correct addressee is not specified in the Sankalpam, then the Tharpana/Srardha benefits will not reach the targeted person however it goes to Gothra Pool for common distribution under the instruction of Swadha Devi. If the name is wrong, then our own Pithrus will get only a portion of the offerings not the full course of food. The Kartha will be responsible for this error. At the end of the day, Bhaavam is very important at the time of performance.

5. Who is eligible to do Tharpanam?
All living human beings must do for their departed blood relatives. The only difference will be its elaboration and methodology between Bhramins and other Varnees. Brahmins should do all Tharpanam, whereas others should do at-least during the time of Death, Ayanam and Srardha Dinam. Of late, due to negligence and lack of knowledge and interest, it is now left with Brahmins only. Due to the Kali Era effect even many Brahmains are not performing this wholeheartedly due to circumstances.

6. What is the difference between Tharpanam and Argyam?
Both are offering water as food to a celestial body. Pithru Tharpanam is offered to deceased ancestors who are suffering from hunger and thirst until they get another body to collect and consume their own food. Whereas, the Argyam is offered to Deities, Gods and Goddesses, living Wiseman/woman, etc. Water has the most significant role in Tharpana Kriya why because, the water is the main source for everything i.e. creation, sustain and dissolution. According to Vedas, the Creator Paramathma created 3 types of fire elements from Pure Water and stored them in an appropriate place.  Those fire energies are Sun (Dhaiveega Agni), Mortal Body (Bhautheega Agni) Lamps and Yaaga Agni for rituals and worship (Vaideega Agni). The Soul is also an energy and water is inevitable. Therefore, through the pure water we can reach our offerings to the departed souls; wherever or whichever form they are now.

7. Why should I do Tharpanam?
It is your duty if you are alive, this is what Vedas says. There are 5 unavoidable duties are given to human beings to pay back their inherited debts (Rrunam). These are known as 1. Deva Yagnam, 2. Bhootha Yagnam, 3. Pithru Yagnam, 4. Rishi Yagnam, 5. Athidhi Yagnam. Yagnam means an effort or an act for the welfare of the other person when does with genuine faith and interest. When they (Now Pithru Sthaanam) were alive, they gave you birth, food, shelter, position, respect, wealth and sacrificed so many comforts. What can you now offer them other than just a Tharpanam or Srardham to your departed loved ones? They are not tangible but exists somewhere by leaving their DNA in us. Anyone who enjoys their hereditary properties and he/she did not perform the at-least a Tharpanam will surely undergo severe punishment for enjoying free properties and its derived benefits. Please note every loan has an interest.  It is the law of nature! There is always a give and take the policy to be exercised in our life. Moreover, it is a matter of respect and compassion towards the departed souls. Thinking about them on a specific and auspicious day makes a huge difference in our life. If our DNA relates to their DNA, we must do the best offerings as prescribed by the Rishis, in fact, this will benefit us more than them. According to Puranas, Pithrus can only bless or curse! choose what do you want from them!

8. Will I get a sin if I don't perform Tharpanam?
Ethically - YES, Logically - YES, Scientifically and Vedanthik view - NO.

9. Should I conduct Tharpanam for the suicide / accidental death person too?
Tharpanam can be done only when the departed soul has joined the group of Pithru Varga Sthana (Network of Pithrus Vasu-Rudra-Adithya) through a Vedic process. Strict rules and regulations are mentioned for the suicidal and accidental death cases. Unless the Kartha (sole hire of the deceased) do all recommended Prayaschitha and regulate their status, it is not possible to offer them direct Tharpanam. Until united with Pithru Vargam, their status will be Bhootha/Pretham and wander around the banks of water resources. By hearing holy names of God, they can get Karma Sareem and come back to transmigration system with horrific lifestyle.

10. When Ubhaya Vamsam (Varga Dhwayam) and Eaka Vasam (Eaka Vargam) Tharpanam is offered?
Except Srardha Tharnam day, all other Tharpanams are offered to both Vargaas (Ubhaya Vamsam - Paternal and Maternal). Vargadhwayam means total 6 + 6 = 12 Pithru members (Example Father and Mother, Grand Father and Grand Mother, Great Grand Father and Great Grand Mother - both paternal and maternal sides).

11. How many Dharbha Grass is used for the Tharpanam activities?
Pavithram made of = 3 grass, Koorcham made of = 5 grass each set, Katta Pullu = 4 each (for Aasanam). Some use only Dhabha Sthambam with 7 or 21 Dharbaas instead of Koorcham.

12. Why Pithru Sthaanam has only 3 clans? What will happen to the previous ancestors?
Pithru Devathaas are 7 members. 4 visible and 3 invisible personalities. Though the the human race is always referred to as 7 generations, yet the Pithru Sthanams (Status) are considered only 3 stages known as Vasu-Rudra-Aadithya Swaroopam (3 generations) plus Viswedavaan who will accompany them to the Kartha’s house. They are Pithuhu-Pithamahan-Prapithamahan / Mathaha-Mathru Pithamahi-Maathru Prapithamahi - paternal side and Matha Mahan-Mathuhu Pithamahan-Mathuhu Prapithamahan /Matha Mahi-Mathuhu Pithamahi-Mathuhu Prapithamahi - maternal side. Whenever the new 4th member (Latest Pithru is known as Vasu-Roopan) joins the Pithru Parampara (Club), the existing Prapithamahan or Prapithamahi will either get Moksham or take next birth. (According to Sasthram once a soul departs from the body, it will come back to next life [re-incarnation] within 3 years or in the 3rd generation). This is one of the reasons why the offerings are stopped after the third stage. Even according to science, in fact, the DNA index/effect will deplete below 50% purity, hence lesser benefits for the Kartha.

13. When do I start the first Tharpanam?
After the first-anniversary Srardham (Varsha-Aabdheekam) the forthcoming Amavasya can be considered. There is no hard and fast rule that one should start only in Utharayanam and someone should initiate etc... First-timers must do this only under the supervision of Kula Aachaaryan/Kula Vadhyaar or knowledgeable elders to avoid mistakes. All male children can perform, and wife/sisters/other relatives can offer help. Alternatively, some Acharyaas recommending to start immediately after the Subha Sweekaram by next Amavasya or any other Punya Kaalam such as Gruhanam, Masa or Ayana Sankramanam, etc...

14. How to do Tharpanam?
There is a Vedic way and there is a Laukik way. If you are well versed with Vedic way do it with good faith and spirit as per the details are given in this book. If you don't have knowledge, ability or circumstances then follow the Laukik way as per below, though this is not our subject here. Our aim is to help and educate Karthas to do Vedic way of this function without any external help.
THE LAUKIK WAY:- After taking bath to wear a cloth they like and stand facing east looking at the Sun, take a pot (mud or copper or brass or  silver) of pure water and hold it in your hand (if possible put 7 numbers of sesame seeds in it), close your eyes, think of the departed soul, and tell them that today I am remembering you…today you left me alone by accepting the command of creator…and…I became helpless…I am no one without you…let few drops of water role out of your eyes…I want you to be with me to guide me …you are my everything…with my pure heart…I am offering you this pot of water…kindly quench your thirst…and bless me…wherever you are…I remain at your feet…then pour the water in the earth. Make 3 times rounds from where you stand and prostrate in front of Sun. Thereafter, offer food to deserving poor people. The whole day you think of the departed person and his/her good and merciful acts. Rest assured, you have done justice to your Pithru Rinam (Debts towards ancestors).

THE VEDIC WAY is given below in a comprehensive manner. Please make use of it and full fill your duties towards ancestors.

15. Will I get any benefit by doing Tharpanam?
YES - directly as well as indirectly. This is basically a DNA system concept. We are receiving or connecting ourselves with DNA through Manasa-Vacha-Karmana form. When we offer Water and Thil to them, they get satisfied and a blessing is given to the Kartha as a reciprocation. By the way the Thil (Sesame Seeds) was exclusively created by Devas for the purpose of Pithru's satisfaction or Pithru's food. Pithru's eatable menu is restricted to Raw cooked Rice, Thil, Water, Urdu Daal and Pure curd (From single cow). Their direct blessings come in the form of Prosperity, Progeny, and Pace of mind in the family. Now let us see the indirect blessings (assume the 4th stage Pithru gets reborn or attained Moksha) - we get to see many unknown persons helping us by way of giving us food, cloth, shelter, money, protection, jobs, facilities, comforts, etc although we are not eligible for it. Why should these unknown persons be helping us? These unknown persons are none other than our own ancestors or our Gothram/DNA member of the past. Now, there are two scenarios a) If they get Moksham (Liberation) then we get a jackpot of huge blessings at once. b) if they take re-birth as a child to someone, that someone will become the reason for our welfare in society. In other words, this newborn child will play a subtle role in his/her parents to take care of us. These two ways, all Pithru Karma Karthas will benefit one way or the other.

16. Where Pithru Devathaas and Pithrus are living?
Swadha Devi’s world is called Pithru Lokam assisted by her Seven Pithru Devathas in total. All of them are living in Swarga (Deva Lokam). Whereas, human Prithrus will live either in Swarga or in Pithru Lok or in Naraka Lok. According to Jyothi Sastram Sarva Pithru Dinam is considered on the “Makham Nakshathra” day. Also note, the amount of Pithru Dosham or Pithru Anugraham accumulated in Kartha’s account can be ascertained by looking at his horoscope 8th and 10th house.

17. Only humans are performing Tharpanam and Srardham?
NO. Seven Pithru Devathas were created by Brahma and instructed them to avail the offerings given by Devas as well as Humans. Out of these Seven, four Pithru Devathas have physical bodies (Sthoola Sareeram) and the other three are having only subtle bodies (Sookshma Sareeram). Humans are performing Tharpanam/Srardham to get the blessings of their Pithrus through these four Pithru Devathas at the same time Devas will conduct to receive blessings from the three Sookshma Pithru Devathas.
Sthoola Pithru Devathas are Four (4) they are:  Kavyavaahan, Analan, Soman, Yamen.
Sookshma Pithru Devathas are Three (3) they are Aaryamaan, Agnishathwa, Barhishathwan.

18. Why Tharpanam and Srardham are in this manner?
Acharyaas kept Tharpanam and Srardham in a complicated and painstaking manner, so that the Kartha will undergo certain difficulties and uncomfortableness on the day of offerings. Now, imagine, how much our parents might have undergone the trouble, pains, sufferings, and hunger to raise us? One must feel the pain so that the Bhavam and Bakti will come to offer them water and food to voluntarily.

19. All dead ancestors are Pithrus?
NO. You can’t just get the Pithru Sthana because you died. This is a web or network to be created by the Kartha through Vedic procedure known as Apara Kriya and admit the dead person’s Aathma Sakthi (Emotional Soul) with his existing 6 members Pithru network.

20. When is the right time to perform Tharpanam?
In Vedic lifestyle, everything has a time (Muhoortham) to perform so that the Kartha will receive maximum benefits/rewards for his actions.

1. Amavasya Tharpanam day: Amavasya must be minimum 12 Nazhika balance (5 hours from Sun Rise of location) otherwise, conduct on the previous day or Srardha Thidhi Mohoortham Day (Please refer to Panchangam and select the Tharpana Thidhi day. The right time is between 10:00 – 12:00 Hours.

2. Maasa Sankramana / Ayanam / Samvathsara Tharpanam: Exactly like Amavasya Tharpanam between 10:00-12:00 Hours.

3. Grahana Tharpanam: For Solar Eclipse once the eclipse starts and for Lunar Eclipse at the time of leaving. Kindly note both Tharpanam must be done only in Krishna Paksham.

4. Sraardha Tharpanam: After completion of Brahmana Bhojan before they get up from the offered seat.
Now you decide what you need to do!!!

Notes to remember:
1.       Stainless or Iron vessels are prohibited. Please use Copper/Bronze/Silver/Mud Pot etc.
2.       Upaveedhi – Poonal position from left to the right side (normal way – Devatha Sankalpam)
3.       Prachinaaveedhi – Poonal position from right to left (opposite to normal way – Pithru Sankalpam)
4.       Katta Pullu and Koorcham Placement: Make 2 rows facing east/west, on top, lay Koorcham Head in North and Foot in the south (Madhyama portion, looks like a head, in the North and Agram+Moolam portion in South direction). Udharani may be placed on top of the Koorcham for stability.
5.       Depends on the family tradition, you may or may not wear Thilakam / Raksha.
6.       Before you perform Tharpanam or Sraddha Karma, please make sure that your Mala-Moothra (Stool+Urine) bladders are empty and try to be empty stomach until completion.
7.       I have used “:” Ha, Hi, Hu instead of Sanskrit symbol for pronouncing the same in words.
8.       Amavasya Thidhi Tharpana Rule: On the day of Amavasya, there should be a minimum balance of 20 Nazhika (8 Hours) from Sun-Rise should be an available otherwise previous day (You may say Chathurdhasyam Thadh Upari Amavasyam Puniya Thithow).
9.       As per Sasthras, to get full benefits of Pithru Tharpanam, Kartha must do first Pratha Sandhya Vandanam then Pithru Tharpanam then Brahma Yagnam after that Ishta Devatha Pooja. (In this way, the half-day will get over, therefore I suggest including “Desa-Kala-Paristhithyam Yadha Sakthi Hiranya Roopena …. Karishye)

10.    I have used sample Gothram, Pithrus' Names, and Panchanga details. You need to replace with yours (Kartha).

11.    This is prepared to assume Kartha’s both parents are no more. Therefore, in case of any one of them or more are alive then the Sankalpam and Pithru’s names will change.

12.    This is based on SMARTHA Sampradhayam, Yajur Vedha Vidhi, Apasthamba Soothram.

13.    Kartha should wear light border or borderless Pancha Gachham and Anga Vasthram (Uthareeyam). Brahmacharis need not wear Panchagacham but Anga Vasthram along with Veshti is a must. Alternatively, Brahmacharis can wear 8 yards’ cloth in Moolagacham style. Best practice says you must wear undergarments and not to expose your secrets parts to Bhoomi Devi.

14.    Keep a cloth for wiping your hand as well as clean the floor after Tharpanam. No one should step on the floor without cleaning. Ideally, the wife or mother or sister should clean the floor for better rewards.

15.    Never wash your hands in the Tharpana Thambalam while or after the performance. Particularly during the function, if the Koorcham moves then automatic upasthanam takes place not only that the touching Pithru Jalam is not auspicious before Upasthanam.
16.    Darsa Srardham (Amavasya Tharpanam) to be done for Paternal and Maternal ancestors without exception.
==============================================================================================
Special Notes:
It is recommended that you replace these example names in various places and take a print out for your personal use. You may have to check with your family elders for correct names etc.

Own Father and Grand Fathers & Own Mother and Grand Mothers (Spouses). FIRST KOORCHAM AVAHANAM

Take few Ellu (Aprox. 7 seeds only) with your right hand (using only middle+thumb or middle+ring+thumb fingers) and start saying the Manthra for Avahanam. Ellu must be offered in reverse hand side. (Inviting your departed ancestors and requesting them to be seated on the Koorchaam specifically placed for them). Top Koorcham for own Fathers & their Spouses and bottom Koorcham for Mother’s Fathers and Spouses. Please note there is no hard rule for top or bottom allotment. However, I have assigned this because to overcome confusion in case arises during the function. Example chanting and Avahan in one Koorcham and the water offered to another Koorcham will ruin the entire purpose of Tharpanam.
